Day 44: Assateague Island National Seashore, Wild Horses and Rain...

After a week at Pam and David's in PA, a night at Jeff and Jane's in Baltimore, a week in a borrowed house in Maryland, another week at Herb and Gayle's in Great Falls, and another couple of days with Jay and Elaine, it was time to cut the cord and actually camp again...

So we went here since if we're near a coast that's typically our default 'cause Angie has this compulsion for beaches.

We'd also heard about the friendly wild ponies that inhabit the island...

They graze all over the place and walk in the roads challenging the cars like unruly kids...

They couldn't care less about us!

Home for the night.  The beach is just over the dunes in the background.
Part of Assateague Island is a Maryland State Park and the rest is national seashore, something we didn't realize until we got there.  The State Park has hook-ups and better facilities, but only allows dogs in one camping area, just about a dozen sites which were all already reserved.  We thought we were going to have to stay in a private place or in a hotel in  Ocean City, but discovered the National Seashore when we got there.  Oddly, the Maryland State Park people failed to tell us about the National Seashore option when we called to get a dog-friendly campsite.  The National Seashore doesn't have the nicer amenities but pets are ok and the campsites cost about half as much ($22.75).
Just FYI, if you're going there...

Kipper loves the beach almost as much as Angie!

He gave his tennis ball a rest and adopted this stick for the day.

This is just a really cute photo of Kipper and has no real value towards the beach blog other than that...

Then the rains came...

We had checked the weather the day before and knew we were risking some rain but didn't expect it to be this heavy, oops.  In the early morning hours, about dawn, it really started coming down.  LeTigre can handle light rain or a quick downpour but her canvas pop-top is no match for a long sustained storm, especially if it's blowing sideways.

So, as soon as there was a break in the rain, we packed up and headed on to our next destination...
